Welcome to the only spot you will ever need for...You guessed it YouTube? (1st Post)
This spot is meant to serve as the only guide you will need for YouTube. I thought it was fitting, to start a conversation about something that I am sure almost all of you use daily. What a better way then to discuss the positive and negative things the YouTube platform provides.
This is my first attempt at blogging, but I would like to have candid and open discussion about this topic. I am currently studying at Syracuse University in a Master's of science program, and am very enthusiastic about this YouTube journey.
Within my studies, I am looking at the field of instructional design and development. As an instructional designer you look at ways to bridge the gap on human performance. At the foundation you find this design set in theories or models. The point of design looks to provide an input to create something new, with an uncertain future, to improve human performance.
Since we are talking YouTube....
How many people in the world do you think uses the YouTube platform?
What do you think are the reasons people are drawn to this platform?
I am not looking for the blogebrity but rather just great conversation...Let me know what you think!
Thanks for visiting!

Kev,
ReplyDeleteAfter a quick search using YouTube’s parent company (Google), it appears that YouTube has 30 million average daily users that consume 5 billion videos every single day. I also noticed that 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube per minute! That is a lot of information being shared. Finally, 1.3 billion people use YouTube worldwide. That is quite an audience.
I dare not speak to why others might be drawn to YouTube but as for myself I call it YouTube University. I go to YouTube because I can learn pretty much anything by watching a series of videos. Not to mention there are videos on just about any topic ranging from apprentice level, to journeyman, to mastery. In fact, for our studies at Syracuse I often find YouTube the better source for learning many of the skills I need to complete coursework. Photoshop, Adobe DC, and PowerPoint to name a few. I have also been able to learn more about instructional design and human learning from experienced practitioners in the field who have taken the time to upload videos sharing their experiences and best practices.
That’s not to say it is all work and no fun. I also turn to YouTube as my primary source of viewing entertainment. My wife likes Netflix, my daughter likes Disney+, I like YouTube. I enjoy watching documentaries and you find a vast amount of those on YouTube.
I look forward to following your blog throughout the semester and can’t wait to see where the conversation takes us.
Mike
Thanks for stopping by. I posted a recent blog with some statistics I found and I also have some questions in there. I would love to hear your thoughts. It seems as if you are interested, like myself in this global video platform. I look forward to the dialogue.

Kevin, there is a lot of information on YouTube. I can appreciate the fact that it is very easy to access. The sky is the limit on what can be learned. Due to the fact that anyone can post on YouTube there are some channels that are purely entertainment or opinion. I worked with a guy who used it to learn how to put up dry wall which turned out nicely. I look forward to following your blog to see how using YouTube could benefit me in my instructional design pursuits.

Kev,
ReplyDeleteI am excited to follow your blog! I am not that savvy with YouTube, so I am looking forward to learning more. I actually googled how to do something in a video game for my son last night and we watched an instructional video on it from YouTube. I now realize that there is so much more to it then I thought. This will be fun!
